Creative Challenge

Calaringe Productions is hosting a Creative Challenge alongside our upcoming run of A Girl Called Owl at the Vrystaat Kunstefees. Take up the challenge to make some art and receive a free ticket to see the show.
(Participants must be 16 or older in July 2026.)

Up to 30 entrants will receive a free ticket to the performance of their choice.

Upcoming performances are at kykNET AWO-ouditorium on the UFS Campus

in Bloemfontein for Vrystaat Kunstefees:

Get creative! Choose one of the following options:

Visual Art

Create a picture, sculpture or collage in any medium (pen/pencil/paint/clay/material). As inspiration, some of the images from the play you might include are an owl, a squid, a jacaranda tree, or a small town with a long straight road out. Themes include growing up, breaking rules, and dreaming. The rest is up to you.

Writing

Write a poem or descriptive paragraph of roughly 80-160 words, in any language, using your interpretation of one of these topics as jumping off point... “Rebels,” "Small Towns," "Dreaming" or "Growing Up." It can rhyme or not - your choice.

Acting

Prepare this monologue in English or Afrikaans (or translate it into any language you prefer); or write and perform your own monologue or scene using the themes in the writing prompt. For example, it could be a character with big dreams wanting to get out of a small town. Make a short video of your performance. If you choose the given monologue, think about what the character’s secret might be and add a line or two at the end to reveal it. Bring your character to life having decided who they are, who they are talking to, where they are and what happened just before this.

Open

If you make art that doesn't fit neatly into one of the previous categories, please make something in the form you prefer - maybe you are a mover, or a maker of music. We invite you to respond to any of the themes or images:

Rebels, Small Towns, Dreaming, Growing Up, Owl, Squid, Jacaranda Tree.

3. Tag us in the comments to make sure we receive your entry

Creative Challenge Terms and Conditions:

Only one free ticket can be issued per person, but participants are welcome to enter as many pieces in as many categories as they choose.
By entering, participants agree to be contacted by Calaringe Productions via our social media channels.
Calaringe Productions reserves the right not to issue tickets to entrants who do not meet the age requirements.
Anyone under the age of 16 who wishes to attend a performance, may be required to provide written permission from a parent or guardian.
